Brenda, Christmas Number One?

This is Brenda, Emma's Mum, my mother-in-law, and she just won a live singing competition on ITV! Congratulations, Brenda - we're very proud of you! :)

Those of you who aren't regular watchers of The Alan Titchmarsh Show on ITV might have missed it (you can probably still catch the replay on whatever 'on demand' thing that ITV does), but Brenda beat off stiff competition over two shows to win the title of 'Singing Pensioner' earlier this evening (Alan Titchmarsh did ask Brenda if she was sure she qualified as a pensioner at one point - ha ha!).

Emma and our girls were up at the TV studios with Brenda and some of the family. Tim Hewitt, Helen and I sat watching it in our front room. After some furious (and expensive!) mobile-phone voting, we sat nervously waiting for the results. It felt a bit ominous when all three judges said that they'd choose "Sue", so after the obligatory loooooooong pause ("And the winner is.........") when Alan Titchmarsh said...

"BRENDA!"

...we went CRAZY! Tim and leapt around the room cheering and shouting, we hugged each other... it felt like New Year's Eve! Ha ha. And then the texts came flooding in.

And here's the funny thing. Having won the competition (and she sooo deserved it), Brenda now gets to record 'White Christmas' with the Chelsea Pensioners, which will then be released in time for Christmas... against the X-Factor single, and goodness knows what else. So, who knows... Megan's, Poppy's and Angel's Grandma could have a Christmas Number One?! (If anyone's short of an idea for what to buy someone for Christmas, now you know!) ;)

Whatever happens, we are incredibly proud of her.

Incidentally, according to 'an inside source', the judges were all very embarrassed afterwards because they'd got Brenda's name wrong... they thought she was 'Sue'.
