Colchester Boiler Room community, new home (...and Megan's new room)

Megan and I enjoyed our day in Colchester helping Katy, Richard and baby-Moses move into their amazing new home... the next chapter of the Colchester Boiler Room community story is just beginning! :)

It was great to see Sally and Robb Harman, Carla, Steve and 24-7Transit student, Joanna, from the Stanford Boiler Room community there as well, and it was pretty easy work with so many helpers.

Those of you who've visited Katy and Rich's previous house, also on the edges of Colchester, will be amazed at the size of this new one... this is an example of God's generosity towards those who have been 'faithful in the small things'.

Katy and Richard have been extraordinarily faithful servants in Colchester for many years... helping churches and groups run weeks of prayer, caring for vulnerable people (ex-prisoners, abused women, lonely people, etc.), offering their lives and their meal-table, often at personal cost. And now God is asking them to be faithful with some bigger things! :)

Just a few weeks ago, Richard was interviewed for the role of community worker on an estate five minutes South of Colchester-centre, close to the garrison/barracks. With no communal space on the estate, local churches bought a large house and converted it for communal use. Richard was offered the job, *and* the house, and they were encouraged to develop their 24-7 Boiler Room community life as part of the life in/around the house. Amazing!

So, we shifted furniture, assembled beds and shelves, unpacked bags and boxes, drank lots of tea, laughed and wondered and prayed together... it was a lot of fun. I just love helping friends settle into 'new home'. And this is far more than simply a new home. ;)

And talking of new homes, Megan's 'new home' (i.e. her bedroom) is nearly complete, after many-more-weeks-than-expected decorating it. What began as a painting-project has turned into something a bit more fundamental!

When I first started pulling off the hundred-year-old lathe-and-plaster, and realised just how ruined these second-floor, ex-maid's quarters really were, I wondered if I'd made a terrible mistake. The walls just crumbled to dust in some places... eeeeek!

But then I got some scraper-helpers working on removing the nasty wall-paper... unfortunately, their initial enthusiasm seemed to fade after 15 minutes or so.

So, I called in 'the boys'. David, Gareth, Neil and (the expert himself) Nick all helped a lot... to balance the plaster-boards, to give me the confidence-boost I probably needed, and by offering their wisdom (and their tools!). I think Nick deserves a special mention considering the number of times I stole him away from *his* decorating, just so he could trouble-shoot mine. Ha ha

And so... up went all kinds of odd-shaped pieces of plaster-board.

And then a few days ago, plasterer-Jamie came over and turned Megan's randomly-boarded room into this...

Beautiful. I keep popping up into her room, just to slide the palms of my hands across the super-smooth plaster! Ha ha.

Megan's now choosing colours to paint the walls... a couple more days and they'll be dry. We can't wait... :)
